In the Bible, Asriel (Hebrew: אַשְׂרִיאֵל, lit.Helped by God) was a descendant of the clans of Gilead, a mountainous region east of the Jordan River bounded by the Yarmuk to the north and Jabbok to the south,[1] and great-grandson of Manasseh, per tribal census records.[2][3][4] According to 1 Chronicles 7:14 (KJV ‘Ashriel’), his mother was a Syrian concubine. [5]

Asriel (Hebrew: אַשְׂרִיאֵל ʼAśrīʼēl, “God has helped”) was a descendant of Manasseh and founder of the Asrielites, one of the clans of the Tribe of Manasseh.[2]

Genealogy

According to Numbers 26:31, Asriel was a son of Gilead, grandson of Machir, and thus great-grandson of Manasseh, son of the patriarch Joseph.[6] The Asrielites are listed among the Manassite clans in the wilderness census, alongside the descendants of Abiezer, Helek, Shechem, Hepher, and Shemida (josh 17:2).[2][7]

A parallel genealogy in 1 Chronicles 7:14 names him “Ashriel”, son of Manasseh (or possibly Machir) by an Aramitess concubine, highlighting textual variations in biblical tribal records.[2][7]

Etymology

The name Asriel is likely theophoric, combining ʾezer (“help, aid”) and ʾel (“God”), a common pattern in Israelite personal names reflecting divine assistance.[2] The name may derive from the verb אשר ('āšar, “to go straight” or “to be happy”) combined with the element אל ('el, “God”), yielding “God Makes Happy”, alternatively, from אסר ('āśar, “to bind”) plus 'el, meaning “Vow to God”.[8]
