A book nook or a bookshelf insert[1] is a miniature diorama designed to fit between books on a shelf.[2] They often depict a form of a street or similar setting in a theme from famous books.[2][3] Book Nooks can be distinguished from other similar types of 3D model kits by the focus of the design. “Where as a 3D model is designed for you to look AT…. a Book Nook is designed for you to look IN”[4]
The idea seems to have originated in 2018 from a Japanese artist called Monde.[5][6] The concept became popular on Reddit, with the r/booknooks subreddit going from zero to 7,900 members in just two days.[5][7]As of June, 2026….It currently sits at over 118,000 members and holds many community events such as a monthly book nook of the month, themed design competitions, raffles, and twice a year charity drives which raise thousands of dollars for charities such as No Kid Hungry and Doctors Without Borders. [8] [9]
The model is sometimes inspired by a theme from a famous book, e.g. Harry Potter (like popular Diagon Alley).[2] People can buy book nooks fully assembled, or create them on their own.[3] There are book nook kits that enthusiasts can use as a starting point.[10]Nowadays, there are even complete 3D printer files available for people to manufacture the parts to build their own kits.[11] While the hobby originated with people building their book nooks from scratch, these days the majority of book nooks are built from kits. Since February 2025, there has been a major move towards starting with a stock kit and heavily customizing it as a way to bridge the gap between stock building and scratch building.[4]
