“Encore un soir” (lit. ‘One more evening‘) is a song recorded by Canadian singer Celine Dion. It was released on 26 August 2016 as the lead single from her French-language album of the same name.[1] Written by Jean-Jacques Goldman and produced by Goldman, Yann Macé, and Luc Leroy, the song is dedicated to Dion’s husband René Angélil, who died in January 2016. “Encore un soir” received positive reviews from music critics and achieved commercial success, reaching number one in France, Quebec, and Romandy. It also entered the top 10 in Luxembourg and Belgium, and earned diamond certification in France and gold certification in Switzerland.
Background and release
On 22 October 2015, Dion’s official website announced that the singer was “working hard” on her new French album.[2] The title “Encore un soir” was first reported on 15 January 2016 by several news outlets.[3] On 17 May 2016, an interview with Paris Match confirmed that the single would be released for digital download on 24 May 2016.[4][5] The song was also made available on streaming platforms, including YouTube and Vevo.[6]
Critical reception
“Encore un soir” received critical acclaim from music critics. Nicolas Houle of La Presse wrote that the song, written by Jean-Jacques Goldman, shows notable restraint and subtlety, calling it the strongest track on the album.[7] Alain de Repentigny of La Presse+ noted that the title track, described as an ode to life, stands out on the album and during the live performances.[8] The song was also praised by Le Figaro, Femme Actuelle, Ciné Télé Revue, Public.fr, Hollywood Life and Idolator as a moving tribute to Dion’s late husband, René Angélil.[9][10][11][12][13][14]
Commercial performance
In France, “Encore un soir” debuted at number one after only three days of sales, with 7,809 copies sold.[15] It replaced Justin Timberlake‘s “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” and posted the highest weekly single sales of 2016.[15] It also became Dion’s sixth number one in France.[16] With this achievement, Dion extended her record for the most weeks at number one on the French Singles Chart, reaching 38 weeks in total. The song remained at the top for a second week, selling 5,166 digital copies.[17] The last time Dion spent at least two weeks at number one was 15 years earlier with “Sous le vent“.[17]
In the following weeks, “Encore un soir” remained inside the top 10. After two weeks at number one, it fell to number four with 3,081 copies sold,[18] and then to number seven with 2,377 units sold.[19] It later rose to number four again with 3,141 copies sold.[20] After Dion’s shows in Paris during the Summer Tour 2016, the song climbed to number two with over 3,200 units sold.[21][22] The next week, it dropped to number three with 2,998 copies sold.[23]
In its eighth week, the song held at number three with 3,601 units sold.[24] It then rose to number two with 2,370 copies sold.[25] Over the next three weeks, it charted at number nine (2,133 units),[26] number eight (2,100),[27] and number seven (2,000).[28] After 12 weeks, the song had sold over 40,000 copies in France.[28] In its 13th week, it fell to number 10 with 1,513 units sold.[29] In the 14th week, it rose to number three with over 1,700 copies sold.[30][31] In the 15th week, it returned to number one with 4,421 units sold.[32] That same week, the album Encore un soir entered the chart at number one.[32] The following week, both the song and the album remained at number one.[33] The single sold 3,969 copies that week, marking its fourth week at number one and surpassing the three-week run of “Sous le vent”.[33] In the 17th week, it fell to number two with 2,786 units sold, bringing its total to 54,472 copies.[34] On 29 July 2016, the single was certified gold by the SNEP.[35] In the 18th week, it dropped to number seven with 1,918 copies sold.[36] The next week, it rose to number six with 1,464 copies sold.[37] In the 20th week, it climbed to number four with 1,946 copies sold.[38] In the 21st week, it fell to number five with 1,871 units sold (61,674 in total).[39] After 21 weeks inside the top 10, the single fell to number 12 in its 22nd week, selling another 1,300 copies.[40][41] Among Dion’s singles, only “Pour que tu m’aimes encore” spent more time inside the top 10 in France, with 31 weeks.[40] On 21 October 2016, the single was certified platinum in France for 20 million cumulative sales (downloads and streaming).[42][43] On 29 December 2017, the single was certified diamond in France.[35]
After three days of sales, the song debuted at number 10 in Belgium’s Wallonia[44] (number seven on the Belgian Digital Songs),[45] number 25 in Switzerland[46] (number one in Romandy[47] and number six on the Swiss Digital Songs),[48] number four in Luxembourg,[49] and number 31 in Hungary.[50] On the Euro Digital Songs chart, it debuted at number 18.[51] In Canada, also after three days of sales, it entered the Hot Digital Songs chart at number 15.[52] It also debuted at number 39 on the Canadian Adult Contemporary chart[53] and at number 92 on the Canadian Hot 100.[54] Dion also debuted at number one on the Quebec Digital Singles Chart.[55] Since its debut, “Encore un soir” has remained at number one in Quebec for 16 consecutive weeks.[55] It also topped the Quebec Adult Pop Songs chart for three weeks.[56] “Encore un soir” was certified gold in Switzerland and Canada.
Music video
On 8 July 2016, Dion filmed the music video on Kleber Street in Paris. It was initially expected to premiere in August 2016.[57] Directed by Greg & Lio (French duo Lionel Hirlé and Grégory Ohrel), the video included an appearance by French actor François Pouron.[58] From late August 2016, short excerpts were shown in French television commercials promoting the album, but the full video was never released.[59]
Live performances
Dion performed “Encore un soir” throughout her Summer Tour 2016.[60] She sang it on television for the first time on M6‘s Music Show – 100% tubes 2016 on 7 September 2016.[61] On 1 October 2016, she performed the song during Le Grand Show on France 2.[62] Dion also included “Encore un soir” in the French dates of her 2017 tour and performed it on select dates of her Courage World Tour.
