—
This template produces an em dash (—), which is longer than both a hyphen (-) and an en dash (–).
Usage
The primary uses of an em dash are:
- To link clauses, as an alternative to a colon or semicolon (e.g. Three alkali metals are the usual substituents—sodium, potassium, and lithium.)
- To set off a phrase or list, as an alternative to a pair of commas or parentheses (e.g. Three alkali metals—sodium, potassium, and lithium—are the usual substituents.)
For further detail on dash usage, see MOS:DASH.
