Sprite comic
Have improved some things on this page, but the section Sprite comic#Legal situation seems to include original analysis. I would appreciate extra eyes on this/sourcing if anyone else is more familiar with this topic. Thanks! TariffedSparrow (talk) 05:21, 30 March 2026 (UTC)
- @TariffedSparrow: Thanks for looking it over! It was a challenging article to write due to there being relatively few sources describing the subject directly. Still, I hope I can asses the three points you’ve tagged: ~Maplestrip/Mable (chat) 07:54, 30 March 2026 (UTC)
- “Sprite comics are generally looked down upon” would, according to Sjöberg, be by “comic fans”. However, I do not like putting a vague, overly large grouping in the lead. I don’t think it would add anything to include the phrase “comic fans” in the lead.
- “not seen mainstream attention since 8-bit Theater”, this is directly stated in the end of the History section. I am not sure what the issue is here.
- “would lose a lawsuit if a game developer decided to sue” – I will have to open up my copy of Webcomics tonight or tomorrow to track down the exact phrasing used in the book. Are you concerned at the certainty at which the article suggests no sprite comic has ever been DMCA’d? ~Maplestrip/Mable (chat) 07:54, 30 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Maplestrip: Totally understandable!
- My issue with “Sprite comics are generally looked down upon” was a couple things: first, I felt that it could be interpreted as either comics fans themselves or other artists within the industry and wanted clarity, especially with regards to specifying artists who are webcomic artists themselves vs. artists in the more “standard” industry. But I also think this is actually well-supported later in the article for both and think it’s worth specifying that it’s both fans and fellow webcomic artists! 🙂
- I see now that the citation at the end of the History section includes a reference to 8-bit Theater, which I hadn’t caught before. I do think that given the age of this source and its lack of availability, it may be worth seeking additional citations if you can find them, but I will remove the note—sorry!
- My issue with this section was mostly that it seemed that the article itself was stating this to me, rather than the opinion of the book author (since it includes some speculation about the legal future). I think it could be improved and made clearer by writing something along the lines of “John Barber, in Webcomics, suggests that it is quite possible…”
- I hope these are helpful clarifications and I apologize for my brain somehow smoothing over these bullet points at the end when I originally replied to you! Please let me know if you have any other questions. I’m not as familiar with sprite comics specifically myself so I might be missing something. TariffedSparrow (talk) 12:54, 30 March 2026 (UTC)
- I’m a Wikipedia editor, @TariffedSparrow:, I love this stuff and thoroughly enjoyed going through these points again. I think your takes are useful and interesting! There are not many sources beyond the end of sprite comics because it’s no longer a common genre, so I had to resort to a 2014 source at the time. I can see that there’s a 2019 source I’ve never seen before that I can try to implement, which might provide a slightly more recent take on the genre. I’ll be sure to make the Legal Issues section clearer as well, once I’m home and have time to open the book. ~Maplestrip/Mable (chat) 13:34, 30 March 2026 (UTC)
